DR. ISAAC YOUNG

Principle Investigator

I completed a BA in psychology at the University of Kansas, a MA in social psychology & program evaluation at Claremont Graduate University, and my PhD in social psychology at the University of Arizona. I started as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology at Beloit College in 2020.

As the Principal Investigator of the SWIM lab, my research aim is to explore the ways that characteristics of modernity and modernization relate to experiences of stress, wellbeing, and identity. See the “Research” tab for details about specific, ongoing projects.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, spending time with my dog Deckard, and listening to heavy metal.

BRIANNA AGUILAR

Undergraduate Researcher

I am a Junior at Beloit College, double majoring in Psychology and History with a Minor in Latinx Studies. My research interests are in applied and social psychology. I mainly focus on cross-cultural psychology and it's impact on minority groups' academic achievement, wellbeing, and behavior, often in relationship to the psychological dimension of individualism-collectivism. I am also interested in clinical psychology, in an effort to better assess and remove the stigma of psychological phenomena that various cultures experience. Last summer, Professor Isaac F. Young and I conducted research on the Immigrant Paradox, which is a psychological phenomenon commonly found in children of immigrants who experience a variety of negative outcomes, such as lower educational achievement and poorer mental and physical health.

ROSIE PASQUALINI

Program Assistant - University of Kansas's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center

I graduated from Beloit in 2021, majoring in Cognitive Science and Philosophy. I now work at University of Kansas's Alzheimer Disease Research Center, where I am refining and co-teaching a program designed to reduce Alzheimer's risk. Also at KU, I'm assisting with qualitative research regarding barriers to dementia care in the Latinx population.

Finally, alongside Dr. Young, I'm wrapping up a set of studies examining the effects of threats to gender conformity on individuals' everyday concepts of gender.

The analytical and writing experience I've gained in the SWIM lab have given me the confidence to keep pursuing research! I look forward to seeing what the SWIM team (?) does next.
